AOL fended off activist shareholder Starboard Value today, as all of the company’s existing directors were re-elected to the board. All eight of them — Tim Armstrong, Richard Dalzell, Karen Dykstra, Alberto Ibarg�en, Susan Lyne, Patricia Mitchell, Fredric Reynolds and James Stengel — are staying according to a preliminary vote count, while the three candidates Starboard suggested were not elected.It’s a short-term victory for Armstrong, although he still faces the very formidable task of making AOL a sustainable business that can withstand the decline of subscription dial-up revenue. Kobo’s Vox�isn’t�the most popular eReader in the pack, but it may have just one-upped the cool kids.
Kobo is finally opening up the device to the full Google Play Store, a move that the company hopes will broaden the Android-based tablet’s appeal in comparison to the Nook Color and Kindle Fire. The move comes as Kobo�continues�to position the Vox as more of a multimedia tablet rather than simply an eReader.
Previously, Kobo had limited the Vox to a select 15,000 apps, but with the expansion, the tablet will have access to Google Play’s entire 500,000 app catalog.

Web traffic from the Apple iPad saw a slight drop in early June, according to new data from the Chitika Ad network, which�analyzed a sample containing hundreds of millions of impressions to arrive at its conclusions. In May, the iPad had accounted for 94.64% of all tablet web traffic, the company previously reported. Today, the company says the iPad has dropped to a 91.07% share. However, the iPad still has a wide lead over its competition, so the change is fairly�negligible. Indie studio Thatgamecompany raises $5.5M to create magical games for wider audiences

The journey of indie game developer Thatgamecompany is about to get a lot more interesting. The maker of Journey, a big hit and highly original game on Sony’s PlayStation Network, has raised $5.5 million from Benchmark Capital.
The Santa Monica, Calif.-based startup’s three-game deal with Sony has expired, and now Thatgamecompany wants to spread out and make games for more platforms to reach larger audiences, said Jenova Chen, founder, creative director, and chief executive of the company.
