SPEC Extends Benchmarks to Cloud Measurements

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC), well known for its computer system benchmarks, is planning to extend its testing methodology to measure cloud deployments as well.
The company has formed a new working group to develop metrics for measuring cloud computing. The group will be a subgroup of the Open Systems Group (OSG), and will include participants from companies such as AMD, Dell, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Red Hat and VMware. Long-time SPEC benchmark developer Yun Chao will help the effort, as well members from the SPEC Research Cloud group.

Index Ventures launches sixth fund for European investments

U.S. and European venture capital firm Index Ventures announced a 350 million Euro fund for early-stage European investments late Sunday. The VC is impressed by the innovation it is seeing in Europe, despite economics issues that have plagued the area for several years.
This sixth-generation fund for the VC will focus on consumer technology, with some enterprise investments. The firm has done well investing in “marketplaces, payments, gaming, mobile, and social” startups, Index Ventures partner�Mike Volpi told VentureBeat in an interview. Apple’s decision to switch from Google Maps to its own homegrown mapping service in iOS 6 is a significant change not just for iOS, but for Apple. It’s rare for the company to suddenly move away from something that’s working purely for the sake of change.
