Continue Reading‘Walking Around Naked On The Internet’: McAfee Says 17% Of PCs Globally Lack Malware Protection
Posted by TechCrunch
Some eye-opening stats out today from McAfee, the Intel-owned IT security company: a study of 28 million computers in 24 countries has found that 17 percent of all PCs do not have any form of security at all on them against viruses, worms, spyware and other Internet malware – a transgression that McAfee compares to “walking around naked on the Internet.”
But McAfee notes that while the average worldwide figure for unsecured PCs works out to one out of every six users, some countries are taking their security more seriously than others…
In Finland, the most protected country, only 9.7 percent of PCs had no security software installed at all. But in Singapore, the most[...]

Sequoia Capital’s $1 Billion Raise Is Very Much About Going Global
Posted by TechCrunch
The famed Sand Hill Road venture capital firm Sequoia Capital is indeed in the process of raising a total of some $1 billion for a series of several new venture funds, we’ve confirmed with sources close to the situation.
The new raise, on which Dan Primack at Fortune reported earlier today, is currently underway, and its structure as of now underlines the storied Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm’s increasing focus on having a global footprint. Legendary venture capitalist Michael Moritz may be stepping back from day-to-day operations at Sequoia, but one of the things he’s been most proud of over the years is making Sequoia a global firm — so this is just the[...]

Google debuts updated Chrome OS hardware, but it still looks weak
Posted by VentureBeat
Google has introduced an updated version of its Chrome operating system and two new hardware options from Samsung that run the web-based OS — but it all still looks relatively underwhelming.
The search giant announced Chromebook laptops running the Chrome OS last May and finally started shipping units in June. Chrome OS is based on the notion of an always-internet-connected operating system. Not many consumers seem exited about a computer that will only “work” when it’s connected to the Web. Many apps work best installed locally on a machine rather than running it from the web. As such, Chromebook and Chrome OS adoption has not been widespread.

Bitly launches new site, makes link shortening more complicated
Posted by VentureBeat
Updated at 3:40pm PDT with a response from Bitly about negative reactions to the redesign
The simple link-shortening service Bitly just got a major redesign. What started as a way to make long links short enough to fit into a tweet has evolved into a social link-sharing site.
Bitly is taking a stab at every browser’s built-in bookmarking feature by offering its own bookmark service. The creatively named bitmarks are links you can save in your private collection or share with the world. Bitmarks can be added via bookmarklet (a button that goes in you browser’s bookmarks toolbar), a new Chrome browser extension, or on the Bitly website.
Of all the content- and link-saving services,[...]
