EU Telcos Call for Less Regulation

Posted by PCWorld
European telcos on Wednesday called for European Union authorities to reduce regulation on the industry.
According to ETNO, the European Telecommunications Network Operators Association, "excessively intrusive regulation" is stifling innovation and the roll out of fiber networks in Europe. The organization wants operators to have more flexibility in setting the price of access to fiber.
"Europe's telecoms operators have to move from voice to data-driven business models in order to monetize rapidly increasing data traffic and reverse the declining revenue trend," said ETNO Director Daniel Pataki in a speech to the ETNO-Total Telecom Regulatory Summit in Brussels on Wednesday.

Posted by TechCrunch
Every year, Cisco issues its Visual Networking Index (VNI) to forecast the amount of data traffic that will be used worldwide. The latest VNI forecast shows a massive uptick in data usage, from the 369 Exabytes of IP traffic used worldwide in 2011 to approximately 1.3 zettabytes in 2016. Cloud enterprise powerhouse Salesforce is in talks to buy social media and brand management business Buddy Media for more than $800 million, according to an AllThingsD report.
Buddy Media helps many major brands manage their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ presence. Presumably, Salesforce could add Buddy Media to its long roster of services targeting the enterprise like Chatter and Force.com. It’s unclear how much crossover there would be with Salesforce-owned Radian6, another social media management service.
New York City-based Buddy Media raised a monster $54 million round of funding last August at a rumored $500 million valuation. Buddy Media’s total funding sits at $90 mil[...]

HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE clear U.S. customs

Posted by VentureBeat
HTC said Tuesday that its One X and Evo 4G LTE Android smartphones have finished the review process in U.S. customs and are being released into the the country, The Verge reports.
Earlier this month, both phone models were delayed in customs for possibly infringing on Apple’s #5,946,647 patent. The patent covers the ability to convert a phone number into a link that can launch a phone’s dialer. The delay was the result of a December International Trade Commission ruling that ordered a ban on the importation of any devices that infringe on the aforementioned patent.
Now U.S. customs has cleared both devices for entry into America and said the phones are in compliance with the ITC’s ruli[...]
